This pair of mid-20th century wrought iron guéridon tables, designed by the iconic Jean-Michel Frank for the argentine company Comte, exemplifies Frank’s innovative approach to design. Jean-Michel Frank (1895-1941), a french interior designer, was known for his minimalist interiors and his ability to blend various styles and cultures. He famously stated that “the noble frames that came to us from the past can receive today’s creations,” reflecting his philosophy of integrating modern elements with historical contexts. His work often softened the severity of modern design with playful combinations of styles, materials, and textures, creating richly layered compositions.
The company Comte, based in Argentina, was instrumental in bringing Frank’s designs to life. Renowned for their attention to details, Comte executed Frank’s vision with precision.
These guéridon tables feature round tops adorned with equestrian-inspired hanging rings, supported by a tripod stand. Crafted from painted wrought iron and sheet metal, they date from the early 1940s. The design’s blend of functionality and elegance, along with the expert craftsmanship, highlights the significance of Frank’s collaboration with Comte. These tables not only serve as functional pieces but also as artistic expressions of mid-century modern and Art Déco styles, making them a valuable addition to any discerning collector’s ensemble.
The pieces exhibit traces of use and the passage of time, with one of the tables showing slight oxidation on the upper metal sheet as shown in the pictures.
