Edition of 7. Hand-pulled acrylic paint and enamel screen print with diamond dust on linen. Signed on verso.
Russell Young is an internationally acclaimed artist who recently exhibited his Diamond Dust Paintings in Palm Beach, Florida.
Youngâ??s work include his Diamond Dust works on linen, including a triptych of screen prints of Hollywood Goddess Marilyn Monroe and musical icon Kurt Cobain, both historical figures in the arts who met tragic and premature ends. His use of diamond dust mixed in with his paint is his way of paying reverence to his featured celebrities.
While the process used to create Youngâ??s Diamond Dust screen prints is a closely guarded secret, it has been revealed that all the works are hand-pulled on the sister press of the very printing press used by the original creator of the celebrity screen print, Andy Warhol.
In 2008 at Miami Art Basel, Young explored this darker side to our cultural obsession in a live-art performance where he demonstrated his unique process and style by creating screen prints from his own blood.
Young commented on his own work: â??I am fascinated by the way light bounces off the three-dimensional surface of my Diamond Dust paintings. In this series light and the way it is reflected is as important as the subject matter. I have hung these paintings from trees in my garden at night under a full moon, where the surface of the bible-black paintings are touched by the cool blue hue of the moonlight.â??
Over 20 years ago, Young was responsible for the iconic cover photo of George Michaels Faith album and has photographed all the greats from Dylan to Springsteen to Morrissey. He has also excelled in the world of video having directed 100 music videos during the golden years of MTV.
Moving from video to art was a natural progression for Young. His first exhibition, Pig Portraits sold out and his silk screens became highly sought after. Like Warhol before him, Young finds his inspirations in popular culture and, in todayâ??s celebrity-obsessed world, there is no shortage.
Young works in New York and California and is married to the actress Finola Hughes.
