Peter Diepenbrock Artist Solid Pewter Squirrel Design Letter Opener / Paperweight Vintage 1994
Steel, copper, bronze, aluminum and imagination – these are the materials that Peter Diepenbrock bends and welds to create the skeletal structures and undulating surfaces of his abstract sculptures. Using the natural rhythms of geometry and repetition, Diepenbrock explores the creation of form and movement. Of his process, Diepenbrock says “I am developing a certain appreciation for the metaphoric potential of ‘organic geometry’. I am seeing ‘form’ as a frozen moment, a snapshot of what is, in fact, in constant motion. Any one of these forms can be seen as fragments of a much larger dynamic…The skeletal line work…defines form abstractly, like the ‘idea’ of a form, which is both there and not there. The shingled surfacing is truly a skin, a surface constructed from cell like elements, which encloses the form giving it the appearance of solidity.” Each sculpture’s final form is but one possible expression that could result from Diepenbrock’s processes.
A Rhode Island School of Design graduate, Diepenbrock has achieved a distinguished record of accomplishment as one of Rhode Island’s prolific contemporary sculptors. Diepenbrock’s work for public spaces include the 9/11 Memorial for the Rhode Island State House; One Exeter Plaza in Boston; Main Street, East Greenwich, and currently the University of Rhode Island.
